New York Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2025 has come to a close, and while no one reinvented the wheel, to me the most interesting themes were the exploration of geometry in pattern making and processes to create – or destroy – fabrics. Seemingly a return to basics, the resulting pieces are anything but! There are favorites from the current season to get the look now, or you can explore the pre-order options and learn the forgotten art of patience, the pleasure in the waiting for what is new.
Negative Space
Negative space can be a great way to spice up an outfit and keep your audience guessing. With shapes reminiscent of wearable pop art prints most of these ideas are light and fun additions. Some bolder shapes for evening are more reminiscent of Serra sculptures, in that it is as much about what is concealed as what is revealed and perspectives change as you move around the garment.
Shapes and Waves
The idea of playing with shapes and waves is not only pleasing to the eye, but is a great way to spotlight the fluidity–or lack thereof–of fabric. Just as how Art Nouveau uses curves to evoke nature, you can use waves in clothing to help you feel grounded and reflective of your experience on earth.
Deconstruction
Tread off the beaten path and delve deeper into an intellectual conversation about design and process by choosing pieces that embrace deconstructism. Disrupt the rest of your wardrobe and start a conversation about what is more interesting – a work in progress or something that is complete.
